According to a copy of the letter obtained by Reuters, Syria has submitted a formal response to a list of conditions for potential sanctions relief for potential sanctions relief.
Perhaps most importantly, the letter vowed that Syria would not be a threat to “Israel.”
The US previously presented Syria on eight conditions, including the destruction of the remaining chemical weapons stockpile, ensuring foreigners are not given a senior government role.
Washington issued a six-month exemption in January to ease humanitarian sanctions, but its impact is limited. In return for meeting all requests, the US offered to extend the suspension for two years and perhaps grant further exemptions.
Reuters first reported during a meeting in Brussels on March 18 that US Natasha Franceschi had delivered terms to Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shabani. In his first address to the UN Security Council, Shibani emphasized that Syria is acting on several demands, particularly in regards to Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile and searching for missing Americans.
A four-page Syrian letter to the US promised to establish a liaison office within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist in searching for missing American journalist Austin Taice, and supported detailed steps to work with Global Arms Watchdog on the Chemical Military.
