For English-speaking readers who may be unfamiliar with Islam and its scriptures, the Quran holds a central place in the faith and lives of more than one billion Muslims around the world.
As God’s verbatim words were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, understanding this sacred document has always required deep and insightful exegesis, known in Arabic as tafsir.
The most revered of these commentaries is Tafsir al-Mizan, a monumental 20-volume commentary widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and influential in the Islamic world.
This masterpiece was written by Allama Sayed Muhammad Hussain Tabatabai (1903-1981), Iran’s leading Shiite philosopher, theologian, and mystic of the 20th century.
Although Allama Tabatabai wrote numerous books and articles, Tafsir Al-Mizan stands out as his greatest achievement and most enduring legacy.
Unique Methodology: The Quran Explaining the Quran
Tafsir Al-Mizan is characterized by its rigorous methodology. Allama Tabataba’i mainly adopted “Tafsir al-Quran Bir Quran”, that is, “interpreting the Quran in terms of the Quran”. This means that in order to clarify the meaning of a particular verse, he cross-referenced it with other verses throughout the scriptures, allowing him to interpret the Quran itself.
He believed that since the Qur’an describes itself as a clear and unambiguous book, it should be the main source for independent exegesis. He said this approach is also used in Ahl al-Bayt (House of the Prophet).
This self-referential approach has earned Tafsir Al-Mizan great respect for its intellectual depth, consistency, and impartiality, making it a highly authoritative source among Sunni and Shia scholars alike.
Prominent modern thinkers have hailed it as one of the greatest Quranic commentaries ever written.

Tafsir al-Mizan is a “sequential” commentary, meaning that it considers the Qur’anic verses in the order in which they appear in standard Islamic texts.
Originally written in Arabic, its 20 volumes have been translated into multiple languages, including English, Farsi, Urdu, and Spanish, making its deep insights accessible worldwide.
Al Mizan’s content is encyclopedic. Go beyond simple word-for-word explanations and explore the deep philosophical, theological, ethical, and social teachings of the Quran.
Typically, authors include in each section of the scripture a part dedicated to examining and critically analyzing the relevant narrations (hadith) of the Prophet and Imam. Furthermore, Allama Tabatabai emphasized the thematic unity of each chapter (surah), arguing that the sections are organized around a central purpose.
Tafseer Al-Mizan is not just a commentary but a vast encyclopedia of the Quran.
It is known for filling gaps left by earlier classical studies while establishing a solid foundation for future research. Its balance, accuracy, and depth make it an important source and treasury of Islamic thought.
For sincere students of the Qur’an, whether Muslims seeking deeper understanding or non-Muslim scholars, Tafseer Al-Mizan provides an unparalleled guide to understanding God’s holy scripture in a consistent, logical and self-referential manner.
It is a timeless contribution to Islamic studies and remains a guiding light for those seeking the depth of the Qur’an’s message.
