TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragci criticized the European Union on Wednesday for not taking stance against US authorities’ provocative remarks about Iran, saying the approach undoubtedly poses a threat to international peace and security.
Aragucci made a statement on a call launched from the Casparold camp in the Netherlands, during which he discussed issues related to regional and international development.
In his remarks on Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with bombing if the country has not reached an agreement with his administration about the nuclear program. “If they don’t make a deal, there’s going to be a bombing,” Trump said in a call with NBC News.
Trump’s threatening words have faced backlash from various Iranian officials.
Foreign Minister Araguchi said Tehran is steadfast in developing a peaceful nuclear program in accordance with international law. At the same time, he said the Islamic Republic is ready for real negotiations from an equal footing to alleviate potential concerns about its nuclear program.
However, Iranian major diplomats need a constructive atmosphere to achieve this and avoid an approach based on “threat, intimidation, tor.”
Araghchi simply “complicates” the situation by calling the threatening language of US officials unacceptable and inconsistent with the UN Charter and principles of international law.
He added that Iran will respond promptly and decisively to any offensive action on the integrity, sovereignty and national interests of its territory.
The Dutch Foreign Minister expressed concern about the escalation of tensions in the region and emphasized the need to resolve conflicts through diplomatic channels.
