Tehran – American film director Oliver Stone’s 1989 film “Born July 4th” will be displayed on screen at the Alasbaran Cultural Center in Tehran on Sunday evening.
Film critic Kurosh Jahed will be taking part in a review session following the film’s screening.
“Born July 4th” is a biographical anti-war film based on Ronkovich’s 1976 autobiography. The film chronicles Kovic’s 20 years of life, from his childhood in Massa Pequa, New York, to his Vietnam War Service, and subsequent paralysis and evolution into anti-war activists. Starring Tom Cruise in his first Oscar-nominated role, the film also features Kira Sedgwick, Raymond J. Barry, Jerry Levine, Frank Whiley and Willem Dafoe. This is the second film in Stone’s Vietnam War trilogy following “Platoon” and “Heaven and Earth.”
Critics praised the film for this fascinating storytelling, Cruise’s intense performance, and Stone’s powerful direction. It earned more than $162 million worldwide, reaching the box office gross that became 1989’s 10th highest-grossing film. He received eight nominations at the 62nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor, earning Best Director, Best Film Editor and Best Supporting Actor.
