TEHRAN – On Monday, Iran submitted an official protest to the UN Security Council against President Donald Trump’s threat to launch a military strike against the Islamic Republic, warning Washington and Tel Aviv of a swift and decisive response in cases of aggression.
Iran’s UN ambassador, Sayed Irabani, issued a warning in a letter to the President of Security Council Christina Marx Lassen and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Irabani said the United States is “fully responsible for the serious consequences of hostile actions” against the Islamic Republic.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is firmly committed to regional peace, stability and security, which strongly warns against military adventurism and responds swiftly and decisively to attacks or acts of attack by the United States or its proxy, or Israeli regime.
Below is the full letter.
Your Honor,
I will write to you about my government’s instructions, including the letter dated March 17, 2025 (s/2025/166), as well as yet another terrible violation of international law and the United Nations Charter by the United States. In a recent interview with NBC News on March 30, 2025, the US President once again relied on military language, publicly threatening the Islamic Republic of Iran with military action, saying, “If you don’t make a deal, you’ll be bombed. The Charter, particularly Article 2 (4), expressly prohibits the threat to the territorial integrity or political independence of a state. The US President has ignored and violated all international norms and principles in which the United Nations have been established since taking office in January 2025. He has consistently threatened independent states with the use of force, a pattern of setting dangerous precedents in international relations. There is concern that the United States, a standing committee member of the UN Security Council, blatantly ignores its duties under the UN Charter and wields military power as the primary tool of coercion to promote political and geopolitical purposes.
In light of these serious violations and their potential consequences, the Islamic Republic of Iran urges the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibility to maintain international peace and security under the UN Charter. The Security Council must explicitly condemn the threat of the US president as a violation of international law and the UN Charter, and demand that the United States support its legal obligations under international law and the UN Charter. The Security Council and the international community cannot remain silent in the face of such warm provocation. If we fail to act, we risk devastating consequences not only for regional but also for international peace and security.
Iran’s Islamic Republic is firmly committed to regional peace, stability and security and has no interest in conflict or escalation. However, it strongly warns any military adventurism, responds swiftly and decisively to the act of attack or attack by the United States or its proxy Israeli regime, opposes its sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national interests. The United States is fully responsible for the significant consequences of hostile actions.
If you distribute your current letters as Security Council documents, I should be grateful.
My best considerations, please accept His Excellency.
