Anwar, who chaired the consultation as head of the Southeast Asian Regional Bloc Association, said that both sides have reached a common understanding of taking steps to return to normal following what is called the Frank discussion.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai agreed to a “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” with effect from late-night local time on Tuesday, Anwar said when reading the joint statement.
“This is an important first step towards escalation and restoration of peace and security,” Anwar said.
He will hold a meeting to ease border tensions, he said. Foreign and defense ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand have been instructed to “develop detailed mechanisms” to implement and monitor ceasefires to ensure sustainable peace, he added.
Hun Mane and Phum Tam welcomed the results of the meeting and shook hands at the end of the brief press conference.
