The first round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington took place indirectly in Oman on Saturday, and the New York-based Diplomatic Relations Council think tank wrote that the speech was in favor of Tehran.
First, the US wanted a direct meeting, while Iran wanted indirect consultations. The consultations were held indirectly in Oman, with the Oman foreign minister taking place as a mediator and transmitter of messages between Iran and the US delegation.
Secondly, it is not known as the major critic of Iran’s nuclear deal, namely the JCPOA. This was concluded between former US President Barack Obama administration and Tehran in 2015, and incumbent US President Donald Trump retracted it in 2018, and announced that negotiations would only address nuclear issues.
Third, the US has shown signs of weakness from the beginning of its speech, and appears to have abandoned its goal of ending Iran’s nuclear program. This was in opposition to the strong demands made by Trump officials prior to consultations. This highlighted the complete demolition of Tehran’s nuclear program and the halt of advances in its missile programme.
