“We are facing a national emergency and all available troops must be mobilized to save lives and control the fire,” Katz said in a statement from his ministry.
AFP journalists on the scene said the fire was raging in a wooded area near the main road between Ratrun and Beitshemesh, and the helicopters were working to put out the flames.

Israeli media reported that a community, located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) of QUD, has been evacuated and aired images of fire teams fighting the fierce flames.
MDA Emergency Services said ambulance teams are located near the fire community and are ready to provide care and support residents.
The motorcycle units were ready to provide medical assistance to busy citizens, the agency added.
High temperatures and strong winds allowed fires to spread quickly in wooded areas, prompting evacuation from at least five communities, police said in a statement.
Itamar Ben Gwil, the Minister of National Security, who oversees Israeli fire stations, visited areas that were prone to wildfires during this period.
In a video statement, he said work is being carried out to bring more support to affected areas and evacuate isolated civilians.
