TEHRAN – The choice of 19 religious and cultural traditions in the mourning of Muharam in northern Gilan province has been engraved on the national list of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage, announced Monday.
State Tourism Director Vali Jahani told ISNA News Agency that the rituals reflect the deep-rooted religious and cultural practices of the region. He emphasized that Gilan has a wealth of potential for religious tourism. Muharam in particular continues to attract widespread attention from both national and international visitors.
“Every year during Muharam, the Martyrdom of mourning ceremony for Imam Hussein (AS) (and his local companions) is held captive across Gilan with a unique emotional and spiritual atmosphere,” Jahani said.
“These rituals not only retain religious values, but embody cultural and ritual aspects that deserve national recognition and international appreciation.”
Jahani emphasized the importance of protecting intangible heritage and stated that official registration of these cultural elements is an important step in maintaining, revitalizing and promoting these precious traditions.
“These rituals are not only reflective of faith, but also important cultural assets that can enhance tourism and strengthen Iran’s global cultural image,” he added.
