The collision of a truck carrying 13,000 gallons (49,500 liters) of gasoline on a major highway sent flames and smoke swirling flames south of the capital.
Mayor Clara Brugada called the explosion “urgent,” burning nearly 30 vehicles leaving 19 of those injured in serious condition, including a truck driver. Among the injured were a baby and a two-year-old child.
Bulgada said prosecutors were investigating, but after it turned over on the highway, the truck appears to have exploded.
“This is a horrible accident,” the mayor said at the location of the explosion.
The gas tanker lying on its side had the energy business Shilza logo on its side, but a call with the Associated Press denies that the company officials who don’t want to be identified are their vehicles. The company did not immediately respond to emails requesting comments or details.
