“Many states are trying to declare their awareness,” she said at a press conference held on Sunday in Ramallah, the central west coast city of Israeli people. “It makes a very important message. Above all, it is a message of hope for the Palestinians, a message of hope for a free, independent, sovereign state.”
The diplomat said the perception of the Palestinian state means “Israel has no sovereignty over the territory of our nation.”
She urged “reluctant” countries to align with what the Palestinian state is ready to do so, and during this week’s UN General Assembly (UNGA) conference in New York, “the voices of the Palestinian people will become loud and clear within the UN wall.”
“The whole world is united behind the Palestinian cause,” Agavekian said. “Israel occupation is the root of all evil within the region.”
In the spring of 2024, several European and Caribbean countries, including Barbados, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway and Spain, officially recognized the Palestinian state.
At the time, Ireland Prime Minister Simon Harris called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “listen to the world and stop the humanitarian catastrophe we are watching in Gaza.”
Recently, Australia, Belgium, Canada and France have announced plans to recognize the Palestinian province.
Meanwhile, the UK has conditionally stated that it will recognize the Palestinian state if Israel fails to meet the criteria that includes agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza.
US President Donald Trump has condemned the call for recognition.
France and Saudi Arabia will co-host a conference on Palestine recognition at UNGA in New York on September 22nd.
As of April this year, around 147 countries, accounting for 75% of UN members, had already recognized the Palestinian state.
