TEHRAN – Restoration work has begun in parts of the historic palace of Aldasirpapakan near Firzabad in Fars Province, cultural heritage officials said on Sunday.
Mohsen Zaiyi, Director of the Fars Tourism Department, said the project focuses on preserving this important Sassanian period monument, listed as part of the Sassanid archaeological landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Fars region.
“Repairs include grouting, injecting gypsum mortar, repairing parts, applying protective gypsum, suturing deep cracks, removing debris and cleaning maintenance,” says Ziaei.
The palace is located approximately 5 km from Filzabad and 90 km south of Shiraz, dating back to AD 224. It was built on the slopes of a mountain near Dez Dr. Aldasil I, the founder of the Sassanian Empire.
The structure is 104m x 55m and features three domes and a rock iwan of 18m high, but some of the iwans have partially collapsed. It was constructed from local stones and mortar, with plaster inside the plaster.
The palace is located near a natural spring-grown pond, possibly linked to the Persian goddess Anahita.
The archaeological landscape of Sassanid in the Fars region includes several sites in the Firuzabad, Bishapur and Sarvestan districts, representing the empire between 224 and 658 AD.
The restoration project has been allocated funds and resources to ensure the preservation of the monument, Ziaei added.
