TEHRAN – In response to a message of sympathy sent by the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Association following the severe earthquake in eastern Russia, the head of the Russian Red Cross has expressed his gratitude for the IRC’s sympathy and moral support.
“This valuable message reflects the deep human and humanitarian connection between the two national societies and we are grateful for this support,” Russian official Savchuk Pavel Olegovich wrote to IRCS Head Pirhossein Kolivand.
“We express our most sincere gratitude for your sympathy and friendly support. Such a message is undoubtedly a great encouragement for rescuers and victims in difficult moments.”
The regional governor on Friday urged a series of tsunami warnings in the region after a strong earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka region, but there were no reports of damage, despite the waves reaching the coast.
A US geological survey said the earthquake was measured at a size of 7.8 and 10 km (6.2 miles) deep. It said a series of aftershocks followed by measurements of up to 5.8.
Afghanistan earthquake
On September 14, Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement viewing the Iranian Red Crescent Association for relief supplies following the devastating earthquake that struck the country.
Iran was the first country in Kunar to send humanitarian commissions to Quake-hit Afghans, the IRCS reported.
On August 31st, more than six earthquakes occurred in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border, on 23.47. The epicenter was in the Kama district, about 30 km northeast of Jalalabad city. Several aftershocks have been caused since the first earthquakes were felt in neighboring states such as Kunar, Laghman, Nuristan and Kabul. The hypocenter of the earthquake was estimated to be just 8-10 km below the surface, exacerbating the impact of the earthquake.
A second earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hit the area on Tuesday, further destabilizing the village.
The Taliban regime has confirmed 2,205 deaths, and at least 3,640 have been injured, but the UN warns that many people remain trapped under the tiled rub.
More than 6,700 homes were destroyed, tens of thousands of people became homeless and urgent assistance was needed.
