The UK has completely reestablished its ties with Syria 14 years after cutting ties with Bashar al-Assad with the former government, Mee reported.
Foreign Secretary David Ramie was photographed shaking hands with the new leader of the country of Damascus Ahmed al-Sharaa.
“The UK is reestablishing diplomatic relations because it is in our interest to support the new government to provide their commitment to building a stable, safer and prosperous future for all Syrians,” Ramy said in a statement.
Photos released by Sharaa’s office also show that Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani met Ramie.
The presidency said it discussed “bilateral relations… and ways to strengthen cooperation, and regional and international developments.”
Ramie said the UK would like to support stable Syria as a measure to “reduce the risk of irregular movement and ensure the destruction of chemical weapons” and “attack the threat of terrorism.”
