TEHRAN – Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations Tourism, stressed the need to strengthen cooperation with Iran to promote sustainable development in the tourism industry.
In Reza Salehi-Amiri’s letter to Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, Pololikashvili highlighted the country’s pivotal role in the global tourism system, according to a press release issued Monday.
Pololikashvili praised the organization’s quality and high level of participation at the 18th Tehran International Tourism Exhibition held in the Iranian capital last month. He described the event as a prominent platform introducing innovative frameworks for international tourism interactions, effectively bridged public and private initiatives.
Furthermore, Pololikashvili mentioned the report of Ian Wilko, Director of Affiliate Members and a public-private partnership in UN tourism, further highlighting the strategic importance of the tourism exhibition in Tehran. He said the event established itself as one of the most important international forums to exchange experiences, promote policy dialogue and clarify new investment opportunities in the tourism sector.
Looking ahead, the Secretary-General proposed two important initiatives for future cooperation between Iran and UN tourism.
The first initiatives include planning and organising the Urban Tourism Conference held in Tehran. He believes it will strengthen Iran’s role in shaping its global urban tourism strategy. The second is seeking greater engagement between Iran and a network of affiliated members of UN tourism, and aims to strengthen scientific, technological and investment relations in Iran’s tourism industry.
Pololikashvili concluded his letter by reaffirming UN tourism’s commitment to continuing a constructive dialogue with Iran. He highlighted the importance of mutual capabilities for sustainable tourism development, deepening tourism diplomacy, and increasing international synergies in the sector.
The Islamic Republic expects to reap jackpots from many tourist attractions such as bazaars, museums, mosques, bridges, baths, madrasas, spirits, churches, towers and mansions.
