Hundreds of American troops have withdrawn from Syria, in line with President Donald Trump’s new approach to the region and as a direct result of the collapse of the Assad government, according to US officials.
According to Al Arabiya, Fox News reported that an estimated 500 troops have withdrawn in recent weeks and several US bases have been handed over to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) or closures, citing US officials.
Al Arabia also cited Fox News as she reports that MSS Euphrates has been handed over to SDF while Mission Support Site Green Village has been closed. Officials who spoke to Fox News also found 3 bases free.
Despite reservations about his involvement with Syrian interim ruler Ahmed Alshara, the Trump administration has lifted Syrian sanctions and paved the way for regional and international players to enter the Syrian market and begin their path to recovery.
Washington gave the Syrian government a list of conditions earlier this year. This included expelling foreign fighters from the country, removing foreign fighters from official military or governmental positions, and preventing Iran and its proxies from reestablishing scaffolding and others.
However, on Monday, Reuters reported that Washington was OK with plans to integrate foreign fighter jets by Damascus into the Army.
Beyond Syria, the US has troops of about 2,500 in Iraq, 3,500 in Jordan, and around 2,000 in Türkiye.
