According to internal notifications seen by CNN, the firing affects 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign military personnel in Washington, D.C. CNN reports that the State Department will begin implementing dramatic restructurings as part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to reduce the federal government.
Those fired on Friday addressed issues such as countering violent extremism. Help the Afghans who fled after the Taliban acquisition. Educational Exchange; Issues related to women’s rights, refugees and climate change.
Hundreds of offices and bureaucrats have been eliminated or changed as a result of the restructuring that began to take place on Friday. The layoff notice issued via email was announced on a flight from an international trip to Malaysia that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is from Washington, D.C.
“Around 3,000 members of the workforce will be leaving as part of the reorganization,” the notice states. That number includes those who have been fired and those who leave voluntarily.
As the layoffs took place Friday, a memo of support appeared around the halls at Washington, D.C. headquarters, serving fired employees. The rest of the colleagues were also seen in the building: “Resist Fascism” and “Remember the vows you pledged to support.”
At the end of the day, employees lined up around the entrance lobby and sidewalk outside the State Department and “applaud” the colleagues who fired fire. Those who lost their jobs emerged from the building, held crying people, several boxes, steadily applauded by their colleagues, and a large number of supporters and protesters gathered for an outside gathering.
“Though these shootings were not carried out with dignity and respect, I came out of the State Department, holding my head high along with my civil servants and colleagues from foreign services,” said Olga Bashbush, a career diplomat who was fired Friday. She happened to tell CNN that she was a diplomat for 20 years and was excluded from her DC office last October.
“Without diplomatic experts, we’re going to have an eternal war where Congress, the US and the president said they didn’t want to,” she said. “We are here to serve and protect us, but I am still happy to serve. Today, all of our colleagues here are happy to serve.”
Former State Department officials and Democrats who spoke at the rally condemned the fire, rebutting that when the roles of diplomats and foreign affairs experts are particularly important, they are victimized when the Trump administration is particularly important when it seeks to mediate wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
They also leveled sharp criticism of the broader reorganization. This includes sweep changes to focus on Trump administration priorities, including reducing immigration to the US and promoting the administration’s worldview, with a focus on protecting and promoting human rights around the world.
