The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) said on Saturday that Kyushu Electric Power Co., the operator of the four-leachacter Genkai nuclear power plant, was notified of the incident.
Watchdog said no abnormalities were detected after the incident was reported around 9pm, adding that there was no risk in the surrounding area, Mintim reported.
Drone flights at and near nuclear power plants are generally prohibited. Saturday’s incident was described as “very rare” by Watchdog officials.
Local governments said there were no abnormalities in radiation levels around the complex after the incident and residents were not told to evacuate.
Decommissioning of No. 1 and 2 nuclear reactors at the complex is underway, but No. 3 and 4 units were reopened in 2018 after the implementation of stricter safety standards after the disaster at Daiichi’s nuclear power plant caused by the major earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
