TEHRAN — The third excavation season has begun in the Zer Hastijan cave in Deirjan city, Markazi province.
This cave is one of the unique and remarkable capacities in the field of Iranian archeology, where previous excavations have also revealed valuable finds from different cultural and historical periods.
Hossein Mahmoudi, director of the Markazi Department of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, told IRIB that the measure was aimed at expanding archaeological research and uncovering cultural layers.
He added that this is an effective step towards strengthening archaeological research and recording the ancient history of Markazi district and the country.
He noted the valuable nature of this unique relic, adding that this step would allow researchers to complete targeted studies and pave the way for obtaining more accurate data in the field of archeology in the country.
He expressed his gratitude for the efforts of researchers and experts in the field of cultural heritage, saying: “This excavation season has begun in accordance with scientific and conservation standards, under the supervision of archaeologist Mohammad Reza Nemati and in the presence of a group of experts, and the results are expected to play an important role in completing the historical documentation and identifying the cultural sequence of this historical monument.”
Mahmoudi also highlighted the state management team’s support for the exploration project, adding that “exploration projects, in addition to increasing historical knowledge, provide a suitable platform to showcase the state’s cultural and tourism capabilities.”
He noted that the Department of Cultural Heritage will continue to carry out research activities and pursue the protection of the state’s precious heritage from a supportive and program-oriented perspective.
Zer Hastijan Cave is one of the historical monuments with high potential for archeology, documentation, and ancient human settlement patterns, and its continued excavations could open a new chapter in the understanding of the cultural history of this region of Markazi province and the country.
The cave is located in the village of Hastijan. The entrance is located on a nearly flat rock 9 meters high and can be accessed using climbing equipment or a ladder. The cave has several vestibules, hallways, and floors; four vestibules and two floors have been identified, allowing for access to the interior.
The first season of archaeological excavations of the cave took place in 2023 under the supervision of Nemati, and the results of this excavation demonstrate the special importance of this cave in archaeological research and the history of the late Sasanian and first centuries of the Islamic period.
A second season of excavations of the cave was also carried out in 2024.
