According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, the train, which was undergoing tests using earthquake-resistant equipment at the time of the accident, struck the workers while traveling on a curved section of the track at Luoyangzhen Railway Station in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, early Thursday morning.
“After the accident, the railway authorities immediately activated an emergency response plan and worked with the local government to organize rescue operations and treatment of the injured,” Xinhua News Agency said.
According to the agency, a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.
Railway operations at Luoyang Town Station have returned to normal after the accident, and treatment of the injured is “proceeding in an orderly manner,” state media said.
China, which has the world’s largest railway network, has seen several fatal accidents in recent years, although the frequency of fatal accidents has decreased significantly in recent decades, the report added.
