In an interview with NBC, Trump called for the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program, but he added that he is happy to hear debate about Iran’s peaceful use of nuclear energy.
He told NBC News that his goal in discussions about his deal with Iran is to “completely dismantle” the country’s nuclear program. Still, he said he was willing to listen to debates to enable Iran to pursue civilian nuclear energy while ending its nuclear weapons programme.
This is the first time a US president has publicly called for the complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear program since returning to the White House in January.
Iran has always argued that the rights to enrich uranium are unnegotiable, and that its peaceful nuclear programme and enrichment capabilities are on the red line.
Iran and the US have recently held three rounds of indirect talks, as Oman has mediated. Yesterday’s fourth round set was postponed by an Omani mediator for logistical reasons.
