The call, the first known conversation since Trump took office last month, came the day after Russia released the U.S., which was imprisoned inside the country, CNN reported.
Trump administration officials said they hope the exchange will encourage new efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
In reading the conversation posted on Truth Social, Trump said:
Trump has been making weeks of informing him of his desire to talk to Putin as he works to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
“We agreed to work very closely, including visiting each other’s countries, and we also agreed to start negotiations with each team immediately. We called Ukrainian President Zelenkisee. And start by letting him know the conversation.
His predecessor, former President Joe Biden, had not spoken to his Russian counterpart for nearly three years.
