“If Afghanistan doesn’t bring the people who built it, Bagram’s Air Force Base back to the United States, something bad will happen!!” the 79-year-old leader wrote on his true social platform.
The vague threat came days after he raised the idea that the US would take control of the base during his state visit to the UK.
Bagram, Afghanistan’s largest air force base, was a sign of a US-led war effort against the Taliban, which saw its government collapse following the attack on the United States on September 11, 2001.
The large and vast facilities, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have repeatedly filed allegations of systematic human rights abuses by the US military in Bagram, particularly in relation to the Washington quagmire “war on terrorism.”
Trump often lamented the loss of access to Bagram and focused on his proximity to China, but on Thursday it was the first time he made public that he was working on the issue.
“By the way, we’re trying to get it back. It could be a bit of a broken news. They need things from us, so we’re trying to get it back,” Trump told the news conference with British Prime Minister Kiel.
Before the Taliban took over Afghan Swas, the US and NATO forces withdrew to Chaos in July 2021 as part of the peace agreement to ultimately control the entire country.
Since returning to power, Trump has repeatedly criticised the loss of the base, linking it to his attack on his predecessor, Joe Biden, handling of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Trump has also complained about China’s growing influence in Afghanistan.
Later Saturday, the US president was asked by a White House reporter if he was considering sending US troops to seize Bagram.
“We won’t talk about it, but we’re talking to Afghanistan now, and we want to get it back soon, because we want to get it back. And if they don’t do it, you’re finding what I’m trying to do,” he said.
