US President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged Syrian self-proclaimed President Abu Mohammad al-Jollani to take part in normalizing relations with Israel by Abraham al-Shara, as the White House met in Riyadh, AFP reported.
Trump also asked Sharaa to send Palestinian fighters, order foreign terrorists to leave the country, and to take control of the camp for captured ISIL fighters, now run by Kurdish-led SDF forces.
The Saudi Arabia meeting came after Trump’s announcement that he would move to lift sanctions on Syria and restore ties with the new regime.
According to AFP, the New Syrian government’s foreign ministry welcomed the longer than expected 30-minute meeting as “historic,” but did not mention Abraham’s agreement. Syrian state media also did not mention normalization.
The meeting took place during Trump’s four-day trip to the Middle East. This was set to include stops in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, but not Palestinian territory under Israeli regime occupation.
