In a post about the True Society, Trump shared another letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum, announcing a 30% tariff on goods detained by the United States from Europe and Mexico.
In both letters, Trump warned that if the EU or Mexico retaliates with higher tariffs, “whatever the number you choose to raise them will be added to the 30% we charge,” he said, according to the Anadolu Agency.
In a letter to Sinbaum, Trump acknowledged the country’s efforts to curb the undocumented immigration and fentanyl flow to the United States. However, he criticized Mexico for not doing enough to stop North America from becoming a “drug trafficking playground.”
“We have been years to discuss our business relationship with the European Union. We have concluded that we must move away from your tariffs and these long-term, major, permanent trade obstacles brought about by your tariffs and non-tariffs, policies and trade barriers.”
“Unfortunately, our relationship was far from each other,” he added.
The letter puts US-EU trade talks at stake as the Bullock aimed to finalize a comprehensive trade deal this month.
Earlier this week, Trump struck countries like Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, imposing a 50% tariff on copper imports and announcing a new wave of tariffs.
