US President Donald Trump’s Middle Eastern envoy Steve Witkoff will be running unofficial UN Security Council operations on Gaza and other regional issues on Wednesday, US administration officials said.
The briefing, which diplomatic sources said all 15 members of the Security Council were invited, will be on the US mission to the United Nations, on condition of anonymity, executive officials said.
Axios, who first reported the news, said Witkoff is expected to explain the US policy regarding the war in Gaza and nuclear talks with Iran. He said it was expected to focus primarily on new aid mechanisms proposed by Gaza, Israel and the United States.
Israel has so far given few details about the new mechanism. European leaders and aid groups have criticised Israel’s plan to take over the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza and use private companies to obtain food for families two months after the military blocked supply to the strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the spread of attacks on Gaza will be “concentrated” after approving a plan that could include seizure and control of aid in the Gaza Strip.
