The gunmen fled after the attack in Yusufiyah, 25 kilometers south of the capital, sources told AFP.
Al-Azzawi is a member of the Baghdad provincial parliament and a member of the Azem Alliance, a centrist Sunni coalition led by Muthanna al-Samararay.
The candidates “categorically condemn these despicable attacks” and said “these acts will not prevent us from continuing to serve our people.”
“Sooner or later the attackers will be punished for their actions,” Al Azzawi added on his Facebook page.
On Wednesday, Safaa al-Mashhadani, a member of Baghdad’s provincial parliament and an election candidate, was killed when a bomb exploded under her car north of the city.
Three bodyguards were also injured.
