A nighttime attack in Ukraine that targeted energy and transport infrastructure injured another 40 people and forced emergency power outages in many regions amid the frigid temperatures, Reuters reported.
The upper floors of houses in Ternopil were torn off in the attack. Black smoke billowed upwards, orange light blazing through the haze of the fire in the skyscraper.
Officials said Russia launched more than 470 drones and 48 missiles in the overnight attack. NATO member Poland, which borders western Ukraine, temporarily closed Rzeszow and Lublin airports in the country’s southeast and scrambled Polish and allied aircraft as a precautionary measure to protect its airspace, Reuters added.
Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said all 10 of the dead were in Ternopil. Among the 37 people injured there were 12 children.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that a multi-storey house in Ternopil was damaged and said others may be trapped under the rubble.
He called on allies to step up pressure on Russia to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine, including by providing more air defense missiles to Kiev.
