“We are receiving extremely disturbing reports of all our families, including women and children killed in northwest Syria,” Turkey said in a press release on Sunday.
He also called for an investigation, saying that there was a “sectarian-based summary execution” by forces loyal to the unidentified assailant and the Hayat Taharil al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group, which now controls the country.
“There must be a prompt, transparent and impartial investigation into all murders and violations and be responsible for explaining in line with international law, norms and standards,” he said.
The UN’s rights director also commented on the pledges made by HTS leader Abu Mohamad al-Julani. “The announcement by the caretaker authorities of their intention to respect the law must be followed by prompt action to protect Syrians.”
The clash between the HTS forces and the loyalty of the former government erupted on Thursday in the Alawi minority center to which President Bashar al-Assad belonged, and escalated to the reported mass murders.
Previously, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) called the conflict deeply concerned, saying that the UN Health Organization was working to provide emergency medicines and traumatized supplies for the injured.
“We urge all involved to respect and protect health services so that medical assistance reaches those in need of most. Peace is the best medicine,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in X.
