TEHRAN – The United Nations Tourism Chief praised Iran’s recent institutional reform and investment efforts, saying the agency stands ready to support the development of an international guide for tourism investments in the Islamic Republic.
The ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the UN agency’s Secretary-General Zurab Polokashvili conveyed this message in an official letter to Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Seyed Reza Salehi-Amiri.
In his letter, Polokashvili expressed his gratitude for what he called Iran’s “transformative approach” and “strategic efforts” in recent months. He thanked Iran for submitting a comprehensive report on structural reforms, investment incentives and new policy measures, the ministry said.
Additionally, Pololikashvili said he was pleased to see Iran celebrating the first anniversary of the establishment of the 14th government and continued efforts to strengthen tourism as an important part of the country’s economic development.
The UN tourism chief also highlighted what he called important institutional reforms, including the establishment of the Center for Investment and Economic Affairs and the Center for International Affairs and Public Affairs within the ministry. He said these measures will strengthen organizational capacity and contribute to more effective sector management.
Furthermore, President Pololikashvili welcomed Iran’s investment incentives for tourism, tax exemptions for tourist facilities, and customs duty exemptions. He said these measures could improve competitiveness, improve investor confidence and support sustainable growth.
In response to a request for technical assistance, Mr. Polokashvili said that the United Nations Tourism Office is fully prepared to compile a “Business and Investment Guide” for tourism in the Islamic Republic of Iran. He said the publication of such international benchmarks would support the ministry’s investment strategy.
He added that UN Tourism’s internal programs are being reviewed to ensure that Iran’s efforts are a priority in UN Tourism’s activities. Polokashvili said a draft cooperation agreement outlining the project’s technical scope, schedule and budget requirements would be shared with Iran soon.
According to the Ministry, the Secretary-General concluded by expressing hope for expanded bilateral engagement, saying that the UN Tourism Office looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Tehran and contributing to promoting the country’s tourism investment opportunities around the world.
According to data compiled by the ministry, Iran generated approximately $7.4 billion from foreign tourists and hosted more than 7 million international visitors in the past Iranian calendar year (ending March 2025).
The Islamic Republic expects to benefit from its numerous tourist attractions, including bazaars, museums, mosques, bridges, baths, madrassas, mausoleums, churches, towers, and mansions, 29 of which are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
