TEHRAN — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has approved two major Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, at the 43rd UNESCO General Assembly held in Samarkand.
According to IRIB News Agency, this decision was ratified in accordance with Executive Council Resolution No. 219 at the General Assembly following a proposal from the Republic of Indonesia.
Based on this resolution, the General Assembly requested the Director-General of UNESCO to annually issue a special message in commemoration of these two major Islamic holidays to remind the world of the cultural, social and spiritual importance of these events.
The purpose of this action is to advance UNESCO’s mission to strengthen cultural understanding and mutual respect, expand interreligious dialogue and cooperation, promote social cohesion and inclusiveness in the international community, and defend the principles of human dignity, equality and cultural diversity.
This action is in line with UNESCO’s core mission of strengthening world peace and mutual respect among nations, and will effectively contribute to building a more inclusive and respectful world. UNESCO’s recognition of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as public holidays is a sign of the international community’s respect for their cultural and spiritual heritage and can be a symbolic step towards strengthening global unity and solidarity.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a festival marked by prayers, reunions with family and friends, new clothes and sweet treats.
Eid al-Adha is one of the holiest celebrations in the Islamic calendar. Muslims celebrate this holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep and goats. Share the meat with family and friends, or donate it to the poor.
