Tehran – Tarbiat Modarres University and Shanghai University have signed a five-year memorandum to expand scientific interaction and international cooperation.
The MOU was signed in Tehran on Wednesday, July 29th by Yousef Hojjat, Prime Minister of Tarbiat Modarres University and Liu Chansheng, president of Shanghai University, the IRNA reported.
Thus, the two universities will strengthen their joint efforts by exchanging professors, researchers and students, conducting joint research projects, organizing science seminars and conferences, and sharing academic resources and articles.
Strategic Partnerships
Iranian universities are investigating the possibility of developing scientific and research cooperation with Chinese and Russian institutions under strategic partnerships with both countries.
At a conference held in China on April 11, Deputy Minister of Science, Research and Technology Saeed Habiba and Secretary-General of the China Scholarship Board, Sheng Jianxue discussed ways to develop scientific cooperation between universities in the two countries.
The conference focused on holding joint academic courses, exchanging professors and students, expanding government scholarship programs, expanding technical relationships, scientific interactions and sharing expertise.
During the meeting, Habiba detailed the academic and scientific potential and capabilities of Iran.
In a side job at the conference, Iranian officials visited one of China’s technology parks to become familiar with technical capabilities and scientific achievements.
Iran and China formally signed the document in March 2021 for a comprehensive cooperation of 25 years.
The document was signed between then-Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Foreign Minister Wang Yii of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
In December 2022, Iran and China completed 16 Memorandums of Understanding under the framework of both countries’ strategic 25-year contracts
Global Rankings
Times Higher Education (The) includes 34 Iranian universities among the top universities pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 33 universities in 2024.
The ranking rated 2,526 universities from 130 countries to generate an overall impact ranking for 2025.
Alzahra University, Kerman University of Medical Sciences and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (ranked 401-600) ranked second.
Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (Ajums), Mazandaran Medical Sciences University, Shahid Beheshti University (601-800), University of Tehran, Kelmanshire University of Medicine and Tarbiat Modare University (801-1000) were ranked third.
The 22nd edition of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR) in 2026, unchanged from the 2025 rankings, placing nine Iranian universities among the world’s top institutes.
Tehran University, with a global ranking of 322, is the first Iranian university ranked.
Sharif University of Technology (Rankings 375) and Amilkavir University of Technology (456) are located in the second and third positions.
The Iranian University of Science and Technology (496), Isfahan Institute of Technology (571), Tabriz University (578), Shiraz University (701-710), Shahid Beshti University (741-750), and Feldousi University Mashhad University (951-1000) are the other top universities included in the Rand of the year.
Among Iranian universities, Shahid Beheshti University has improved its position of 100 from 851-900 in 2025, Mehr News Agency reported.
