According to Elpais (Uruguay), the dominant widespread front-party political committee unanimously approved a statement issued by the “Uruguay Anti-Imperialist Commission in Solidarity with Cuba and the World People” denounces US military activities near Venezuela’s territorial waters.
During Monday’s session, the statement was read, revised and passed by the overwhelming majority. The text strongly condemns the deployment of more than 4,500 US military personnel in the Caribbean, accompanied by the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Ellie, the nuclear powered attack submarine USS Newport News, and other destructive weapons operating near the Venezuelan Sea.
The declaration highlighted that these USes will be implemented under the Trump administration, violating international law and pose a serious threat to peace, security and regional stability. He emphasized that Washington’s actions would not put Latin America’s status as a “zone of peace.”
The statement also welcomed the call from Colombian President Gustavo Petro to express solidarity, particularly with the people of Venezuela, in response to the actions of the United States. It urged Washington to respect its international commitment.
The declaration cited both the Tlatelolco treaty and the CELAC declaration, which establishes Latin America and the Caribbean as a nuclear-free territory of peace.
Established in 2021, Uruguay’s anti-imperialist committee includes the PIT-CNT (Central Trade Union), the broad front, the Uruguayan Student Federation, the Federation of Housing Cooperatives for Mutual Aid, the Association of Former Political Prisoners, and other social groups.
