“Today, while the U.S. Border Patrol was conducting an immigration enforcement operation near 26th Street and Kedzie Street in Chicago, Illinois, an unknown man driving a black Jeep opened fire on agents and fled the scene. An unknown agitator also threw paint cans and bricks at Border Patrol vehicles,” the agency wrote in X.
The suspect and the vehicle remain at large, according to the department.
“Over the past two months, there has been an increase in assaults and sabotage targeting federal law enforcement during operations. These confrontations highlight the dangers federal agents face every day and the escalating attacks on law enforcement,” the department added.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump dispatched 300 National Guard troops to Chicago, Illinois’ largest city. Related protests broke out in the city, and armed border guards used substances similar to chemical irritants against protesters.
Illinois state officials filed a lawsuit against Trump on October 6, alleging that deploying the National Guard on state territory is illegal. The court scheduled a hearing on the case for Thursday, October 9, and declined to block the administration’s order to deploy troops until then.
In August, President Trump announced a number of federal actions aimed at combating crime in Washington. By statute, U.S. leaders placed the Washington Police Department under direct control of the federal government. He also sent the National Guard to Washington and threatened to send in the military if necessary.
