“Naturally, this has caused ripples around the world and in the United States, but many people understand the danger of this move, the risk of resuming nuclear testing, which we have been conducting since the early 1990s. This could lead to a new escalation, a rekindling of the arms race, and generally unpredictable outcomes,” Nebenzia said.
The Russian government will continue to monitor developments, the ambassador added.
President Trump said last week that he had directed the War Department to immediately resume nuclear testing. He also said it was “appropriate” for the U.S. to follow his order because “others are doing the testing.”
“In response to tests of new cruise missiles and nuclear-capable underwater weapons, President Trump said the United States is considering resuming nuclear testing. This is a significant statement. The outcome remains to be seen,” Nebenzia said.
The ambassador noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting of the Russian Security Council, during which he stressed that such statements should be taken “seriously.”
Nebenzia added: “We need to prepare for such developments.”
