In Los Angeles, there was a tense conflict as riot police and demonstrators — protesting federal immigrant raids — were squared in the downtown area, Al Jazeera reported.
Earlier on Friday, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained dozens of people during the attack on Los Angeles city.
An unmarked military-style caravan with unified federal agents flowed into the city as part of its operations.
According to the Los Angeles City News Service, Ice Agents have raided several locations, including apparel stores in the city’s fashion district, Home Depot in the Westlake district, and clothing warehouses in South Los Angeles.
In response, crowds protesting the attack protested outside the prison, with some of the detainees spraying anti-ice slogans on the walls of the Edward R. Loibal Federal building in downtown Los Angeles and spraying them with spray-painted anti-ice slogans.
Los Angeles Police Station (LAPD) officers – who did not take part in the immigrant raid – were called to quell the anxiety. Fitted with batons and tear gas rifles, LAPD officials faced off against demonstrators after authorities ordered them to disband on Friday night.
Some protesters threw broken concrete at LAPD officials, Reuters reports. Police responded by firing volleys of tear gas and pepper spray.
LAPD spokesman Drake Madison said police on the scene had declared the rally an illegal assembly. In other words, he said those who did not leave the area are subject to arrest.
