In an official statement, President Caracas rejected US attempts to apply extraterritoriality to Venezuela, saying the US move threatens Venezuela’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to Xinhua news agency.
Amid rising tensions between the two countries, US President Donald Trump said early Saturday that airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered a “total” closure.
“To all airlines, pilots, drug traffickers, and human traffickers, please consider completely shutting down the airspace over and around Venezuela,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, without providing further details.
The statement said the U.S. action constituted a clear threat to use force, which is prohibited by the United Nations Charter.
The statement said that under the 1944 Treaty of Chicago, each state exercises exclusive sovereignty over the airspace over its territory, and stressed that Venezuela would not accept “commands, threats or interference” from any foreign power.
The statement appealed to the international community to firmly reject this “immoral act of aggression,” adding that Venezuela would respond with legitimacy and dignity.
