The earthquake that took place on Wednesday at 12:49 (09:49 GMT) in the Marmara Sea off the coast of Istanbul’s Silburi region registered a preliminary 6.2 size, reporting the Turkiye Disaster and Emergency Department (AFAD).
According to the German Centre for Geoscience Research (GFZ), it was 10km (6.21 miles) deep.
There were no immediate reports of damage, but people evacuated the buildings as umbled structures in cities on the European and Asian coasts of the Strait of Boschors. Broadcasting station TGRT reported that one person was injured as a result of jumping off a balcony during an earthquake that occurred during a public holiday in Turkey.
In a post on X, Turkiye’s Home Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that emergency authorities launched “field assessments” and often offered wishes to those affected.
The AFAD warned local people against entering damaged buildings.
