Police in the capital Ankara and Istanbul launched tear gas and water cannons, social media videos and local Turkish media have shown to disperse protesters’ gatherings.
Turkish authorities detained Imamoguru, President Receptacle Erdogan’s major political rival, on Wednesday, as part of an investigation into corruption and terrorism. Declining orders were also issued on Wednesday for around 100 others connected to the mayor, including his press advisor Murat Ongun, according to the state-run telecommunications agency Anadolu.
Friday’s protest follows several violent cases on Thursday. At least 16 police officers were injured and at least 53 were detained during clashes with protesters across Turkey on Thursday, according to Turkish Home Minister Ali Erikaya. The number of protesters injured during the ongoing protests is unknown.
