The US troops have withdrawn hundreds of troops from Syria. The Pentagon is framing this as a “integration” that reflects the Department of Defense’s changing security environment, Hill reported.
“The United States was aware of its success with ISIS, including its territorial defeat in 2019 under President Trump. Today, the Secretary of Defense has directed the integration of Syrian US forces, combining the Syrian joint task force.
Parnell said the drawdown is a “intentional and conditional process” that will reduce Syrian US forces to less than 1,000 in the coming months.
Dip comes after US troops under the Biden administration announced in December that they had raised the number of Syrian troops from 900 to 2,000, helping to increase the threat from the region’s ISIS and militia.
The Pentagon statement did not say where the troops will be withdrawn from Friday, but the New York Times reported Thursday that the US forces will close three of eight small front posts in Northeast Syria and withdraw about 600 service members. Two U.S. officials said the outlet had the base being the Mission Support Site Green Village, MSS Euphrates, the third smallest facility.
