Iranian officials have long argued that Western-imposed sanctions, particularly US sanctions, violate international law and human rights. Sanctions are hindering all countries seeking to develop economic ties with Iran.
Kazem Gharibabadi said “we will gather when the international community is facing a moral and legal intersection.”
“On the one hand, we benefit from our collective commitment to peace, equality and multilateralism, while on the other hand we witness a surge in unilateral enforcement measures that cause systemic suffering,” he added.
Galibabadi made his speech at international conferences on unilateral enforcement measures, access to justice at the national, regional and international levels. Organized in collaboration with UN agencies and human rights advocates, the event highlighted the narratives of affected individuals and countries subject to sanctions.
Galibabadi picked out the harm caused by “illegal sanctions” and said their true function was not just a legitimate diplomatic tool but “as an instrument of economic warfare.”
Iran is expected to work with international partners to challenge the legality of unilateral sanctions and seek remedies through multilateral agencies.
