US President Donald Trump’s special envoys are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the US peace plan to end the war in Ukraine.
Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting in Moscow, the White House said it was “very optimistic” that a deal could be reached. But Ukraine remains wary of the proposal, saying it reflects Russian demands that remain difficult to accept, despite talks with U.S. officials on Sunday and Monday.
President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will visit the Russian capital with the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. It is part of a renewed US diplomatic effort to mediate an end to the war in Ukraine. The war was sparked in February 2022, when Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of its neighboring country.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently told reporters that a meeting between Putin and Witkov is scheduled for the afternoon of December 2.
The Wall Street Journal earlier reported, citing sources, that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will visit Moscow on Monday “for further talks” on resolving the Ukraine crisis.
