Since Tuesday through Tuesday, the fires have burned homes, farms and factories, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists, Reuters reported.
Dozens of people have been taken to hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation since Tuesday, public broadcaster ERT reported. Firefighter spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said that around 13 firefighters are being treated for burns and other injuries.
Approximately 5,000 firefighters, supported by 33 aircraft, were deployed from dawn to contain inflamed and arid conditions in the winds and hot and dry conditions near Patras, the tourist islands of Chios and Zakkinsos, and at least three inland spots.
“Today is going to be another very difficult day, because the risk of wildfires in most parts of the country will be very high,” Vathrakogiannis said. Temperatures were predicted to reach 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit) in some locations.
