Witkoff learned of Israel’s attack on Hamas officials in Doha the morning after the attack occurred. At the time, Trump wrote on social media: “This is a decision Prime Minister Netanyahu made, not mine.”
“I think Jared and I both felt a little bit betrayed,” Witkoff told “60 Minutes” correspondent Leslie Stahl.
Asked about Trump’s reaction, Kushner said: “I think he felt that what the Israelis were doing was getting a little bit out of control. I think he felt it was time to be very strong and stop actions that he felt were not in his long-term interests.”
Witkoff said Israel’s attack on Qatar hampered negotiations because Qatar was a link between negotiators and Hamas.
“There was a metastasis effect because the Qataris were just as important to the negotiations as the Egyptians and the Turks,” Witkoff said. “We had lost the trust of the Qataris. So Hamas went underground and it was very difficult to get to them.”
