U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to leave the Trump administration to refocus on his business after serving as the lead negotiator for the Gaza ceasefire, two sources familiar with the matter told Middle East Eye.
The people, who requested anonymity to disclose private discussions, said Witkoff plans to leave the administration to refocus on his business after completing a “grueling” schedule of shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East.
Witkoff’s withdrawal could raise questions about the extent to which the United States will remain involved in subsequent stages of President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan. The plan vaguely calls for everything from rebuilding Gaza to appointing a government of Palestinian engineers.
President Trump said he would chair a so-called “peace commission” that would oversee Gaza. But U.S. and Arab diplomats question how aggressive President Trump will be in forcing Israel to abide by ceasefire terms, especially after winning a peace summit in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
