RT reported earlier that President Zelenskiy expected to hear back from the US delegation after the high-stakes Kremlin talks on the Ukraine peace plan.
On Tuesday, journalist Alex Raufoglu, writing for the Kyiv Post, initially reported that Zelenskiy was scheduled to meet with US officials in Brussels tonight, citing sources. However, a few hours later, the prime minister said there had been a change in plans and that “the talks in Brussels have been canceled” and that “Mr. Zelenskiy will be returning home,” without elaborating on the reason.
After leaving Russia, the plane believed to have carried Witkoff returned directly to the United States without making any stops in the European Union, TASS reported, citing European air traffic sources.
Earlier, Axios also reported that Mr. Witkov was scheduled to meet with Mr. Zelensky to explain his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian leader said he was expecting signals from Mr. Witkov and Mr. Kushner and suggested he could meet with President Trump soon if the Kremlin meeting goes well. The US president had previously refused to meet with Zelenskiy and Putin until the peace deal was in its final stages.
The apparent cancellation of the talks came after Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said he had promised Moscow that the American delegation would not go to Kiev but return to Washington after the Kremlin talks.
His comments came after five hours of talks between Russia and the United States in the Kremlin. Ushakov described the negotiations as “useful, constructive and meaningful,” but added that “no compromise has been found” and that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”
The negotiations focused on a U.S.-backed peace framework and were initially tied to a 28-point draft leaked last month. The plan reportedly calls for Kiev to give up territory in the Donbas region, abandon its NATO ambitions and limit the size of its military, which Kiev considers to be a violation of the agreement.
