Tehran – The Tehran Theater is holding a stage adaptation of Woodyaren’s short story “My Apology” at Medea Hall.
Morteza Mohammadian directed the play and performed with Shahin Amrai, Mana Naseri, Farhad Judaki, Amirza Jahani, Alileza Nazemzadeh and Saman Mohammadian.
Originally published in 2010, “My Apology” is a recurring fantasy/dream story of his imagination of himself in Socrates’ sandals in the philosopher’s final prison.
Allen recounts his repetitive dreams of casting himself as one of the imprisoned and condemned philosopher Socrates, one of the greatest thinkers of history. Faced with execution, Allen’s version of Socrates is prepared for a cynical death, if not noble.
Socrates (470-399 BC) was a Greek philosopher in Athens, and was recognized as the founder of Western philosophy and the first moral philosopher in the ethical tradition of thinking.
The enigmatic figure, Socrates has not written any texts and is known primarily through the posthumous accounts of classical writers, particularly his students, Plato and Xenophon. These accounts are written as dialogues, and Socrates and his interlocutors look into the subject in a question and answer style. They created the Socrates’ dialogue literary genre.
Socrates was a polarized figure in Athenian society. In 399 BC he was accused of distrust and corrupting young people. After a day-long trial, he was sentenced to death. He spends his final day in prison and refuses an offer to help him escape.
Plato’s dialogue is one of the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates for survival from ancient times. They demonstrate Socrates’ approach to the fields of philosophy, including epistemology and ethics.
Socrates is known for declaring his utter ignorance. He said the only thing he knew was his ignorance and to try to imply that the realization of his ignorance was the first step in philosophy.
Socrates had a strong influence on philosophers in the future, and continues to do so even today. He was studied by medieval and Islamic scholars, and played an important role in the idea of the Italian Renaissance, particularly in the humanist movement. Socrates’ portrayal in art, literature and popular culture has made him a widely known figure in the Western philosophical tradition.
