Tehran – Marked on the first Monday of October each year, the 2025 world habitat focuses on dealing with urban crises such as climate change, human evacuation, inequality and urban sustainable solutions.
The United Nations designated the world’s habitat day in 1985. This day is reflected in the condition of our towns and cities and the fundamental rights to appropriate shelters.
It also aims to remind the world that we all have the power and responsibility to shape the future of cities and towns. It is our collective responsibility for the future of human habitat.
This year it will be held on October 6th. Global compliance with World Habitat Day is related to urban crisis response. The theme focuses on addressing multiple crises affecting urban areas, including climate and conflict, which contribute to inequality, and promoting existing tools and approaches to effective crisis response.
The day highlights sustainable, scalable and transformative solutions for urban evacuation that help stabilize the population while promoting prosperity and promoting social cohesion for all. It highlights the importance of urban and territorial planning, comprehensive urban governance, and the role of local governments in sustainable solutions for evacuation.
Iran, like many countries, faces challenges such as widespread marginalization, inadequate standard housing, pressure on natural resources, water crises, air pollution and land use changes.
The pressure on cities is increased by rapid urban population growth and migration from rural areas.
To strengthen cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United Nations Habitat, the country has taken various measures to alleviate the issues, including the establishment of a non-habitat Tehran office in 2009, contributing to the theme of sustainable urban development and promoting unbearable activities through policy development, institutional implementation and improving potential activities.
The need to implement national urban renewal plans and improve aging structures, develop social and supportive housing projects for low-income households, emphasize urban environmental protection, reduce pollution and develop green spaces are among other actions.
World Habitat Day is an opportunity to review the country’s urban policy. Promoting justice in access to urban services, utilizing the latest technology in crisis management, and improving urban resilience to climate change are one of the main necessities.
Realizing the Iranian target of “urban crisis response” requires cooperation between executive bodies, scientific institutions and public participation to provide sustainable settlements and healthy human habitats for current and future generations.
