The Middle East is currently suffering from serious confusion. Shortly after reaching a fragile ceasefire with Iran, Israel launched an attack on southern Lebanon, causing casualties. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinians continues to intensify, said Hu Kong, China’s permanent representative of the United Nations, Xinhua said.
Continuing the war in Gaza will only lead to more casualties, and the right way is to halt hostility and negotiations against political resolution.
“We urge Israel to immediately suspend all military operations in Gaza. Countries that have a significant impact on those involved should act in a fair and responsible manner and take effective action to promote a ceasefire,” he told the Security Council.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is extremely important. “Israel must immediately lift the Gaza blockade, fully restore humanitarian access and fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law as a right of occupation by working with the United Nations and other humanitarian groups in their work,” Fu said.
Israel continued to pursue a policy of reconciliation in the West Bank, reopening the land registration of Region C under its control, destroying Palestinian homes, tolerating settlers’ violence, and expanding military operations. Such actions violate international law and security council resolutions and erode the foundations of an independent Palestinian state. China is asking Israel to halt attacks and reconciliation activities in the West Bank, curb settler violence and lift restrictions on Palestinian banks, he said.
The Palestine question lies at the heart of the Middle East issue. Implementing a two-state solution is the only viable path to solving the Palestinian problem. He said the international community must jointly provide support and assurances to strengthen unity and advance the political process of solutions for the two states, and firmly oppose the forced relocation of Palestinians and the dangerous attempts to Gaza and the West Bank.
China will continue to work with the international community to end the fighting in Gaza, mitigate humanitarian catastrophe, implement solutions for the two states, and work for a comprehensive, fair and lasting reconciliation of Palestinian questions.
