TEHRAN – Iranian judiciary issued a decisive ruling against the perpetrators involved in the 2022 and 2023 terrorist attacks against Shiraz’s respected Shahsheraf Shrine, and sentenced three individuals to death to coordinate the attack.
On Sunday, Fars State Attorney General Sadrola Rajae Nasab announced that Shiraz court has concluded the sentences for seven defendants related to the attack.
“Three of the defendants identified as masterminds of ISIS behind these heinous acts have been convicted of “spreading corruption on earth” and “conspiracy in engaging in war against God,” said Rajay Nasab.
In addition to the death penalty, each received a 25-year prison sentence for their role in promoting terrorism.
A respected place for Shia Muslims and one of Iran’s most important pilgrimage sites, Shah Shera Shrine, has been attacked twice by terrorists associated with ISIS.
The first attack in October 2022 killed 13 people, and the second attack in August 2023 caused two deaths. Both cases sparked widespread condemnation, vowing to strictly pursue all perpetrators.
Rajaei-Nasab highlighted that the trial addressed both operational and logistics roles. Two ISIS-related members received 15 and 10 years’ sentences to supply arms and ammunition, while two female defendants were sentenced to five years’ sentences.
“In line with Islamic compassion, women will provide their writing under electronic surveillance within a 1,000 metre radius of their residence,” he pointed out.
Judicial officials stressed that the three masterminds were central to “planning terrorist operations within Iran,” adding that their arrests had hindered subsequent plots.
Previous cases related to the attack had already seen the execution of two perpetrators in July 2023.
Iran has repeatedly highlighted the zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, particularly the threats organized by groups such as ISIS. The investigation of the broader network continues, but the latest ruling closes an important chapter in Shah Cheragh’s case.
Rajaei-Nasab has reaffirmed his judicial vigilance. “Iran’s security and judicial bodies mercilessly pursue those who endanger public safety. These verdicts send a clear message. Terrorism faces decisive justice.”
